Laser
Surgery:
LASERS have revolutionized human surgical specialties such as Ophthalmology and Neurosurgery, and Veterinarians are now applying the same technology to treat our clients pets. The LASER is an intense beam of light that replaces the scalpel in a number of our surgeries. It can be used as a multipurpose tool because it can cut, cauterize, and vaporize tissue. The way a laser beam reacts with tissue is what makes it such a remarkable instrument. A LASER seals nerve endings and blood vessels as it cuts. As a result our patients like human LASER patients, feel less pain and there is little to no bleeding. Nothing touches the tissue but an invisible beam of light. Because there is no contact with the tissue, there is very little swelling postoperatively. With traditional methods, there is a small but unavoidable amount of tearing, crushing, and bruising that leads to postoperative swelling, or edema. Using a CO2 LASER allows us to be more accurate because it only acts upon targeted tissue and leaves normal tissue, as little as a tenth of a millimeter away, unaffected. The LASER is so precise that we can perform surgeries in and around the eyes, ears and mouth that would have been very difficult or impossible, without a LASER. The cat declaw procedure most clearly illustrates the difference between LASER and conventional surgical techniques. Conventional surgery requires a tourniquet to control the bleeding, post op sutures, heavy pressure bandages and a two night hospitalization. Post OP pain medication is greatly encouraged. With the LASER, no tourniquet is used since there is no bleeding during surgery. The small hole is closed with surgical glue and the cats can go home the next day. Most cats are walking normal and even playing with toys with there feet within a couple hours of the surgery. We keep them overnight because we are concerned they will feel so good at home, that they will run and jump like usual and open up the surgery sites. The LASER can be used for other routine surgeries such as spays and neuters with the same benefits as the cat declaw. We also recommend the LASER for tumor removal. Especially around the face and anus since these are very vascular areas. Some small tumors can be removed with only local anesthesia and without the need for sutures. There are also many specialized surgeries that the LASER is ideal for. Elongated Soft Palates, Total Ear Resections, Perineal Urethrostomies, Entropion, and Mastectomies just to name a few. We strive
to offer our clients the best medical and surgical care available for
their pets and to be current with the latest technologies. Our clients
want the best for their pets, who in many cases are like another member
of their family. |
